Djokovic wears down Murray to reach semis

NOVAK DJOKOVIC wore down Andy Murray to advance into the U.S. Open semifinals for the eighth straight year.

Both players put on a show in two back-and-forth sets, prolonging points that involved 10 or 20 strokes or more.

Murray, who has been struggling to regain his old form after undergoing surgery last year, eventually faded and Djokovic pulled away for a 7-6 (1), 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-4 win.

The match that ended around 1 a.m. Thursday (Thursday afternoon in Manila) lasted 3 hours and 32 minutes.

“I knew coming into tonight’s match that it’s going to be tough, that he’s going to go for his shots, and the more aggressive one would win it,” the top-seeded Djokovic said. “I’m glad I managed to stay fit in the end and pull it through.”

Djokovic will next face Kei Nishikori, who became the first player from Japan to reach the U.S. Open semis since Ichiya Kumagae in 1918 following a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-4 victory over Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka. Noli Cruz
