Wawrinka keeps semis hope alive

STANISLAS WAWRINKA defeated David Ferrer, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 61, to keep alive his hopes of reaching the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals Friday at the O2 Arena in London.

The exhausted Ferrer, playing in his seventh straight week of tournament play, took the opening set after rallying from 2-5 down. But Wawrinka proved too much for the world number three the rest of the way and secured the win after just less than two and a half hours.

It is almost certain to bring Wawrinka the reward of a place in the last four: only an improbable victory by Tomas Berdych over Rafael Nadal in the final Group A tie on Friday night would deny Wawrinka a spot in the semifinals.

Nadal is already sure of his place in the last four, but Berdych needs to end his miserable run of 15 consecutive defeats at the hands of the Spaniard to advance.

If Berdych loses to Nadal, Wawrinka will go through to the semifinals as runner-up behind the world number one. Noli Cruz
