HOUSING AWARD FOR NAVOTAS MAYOR

arlie-calalo41 FOR putting up more housing units for homeless and poor residents, Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco gets the “Housing Award” from no less than Vice President Jejomar Binay during a ceremony held at SM Megatrade Hall.

The award, this writer was told, has recognized the vital role of the city government “in promoting efficient delivery of housing strategies, programs and projects, thus, enhancing the provision of housing services truly responsive to the needs of Filipino families.”

His elder brother, Rep. Toby Tiangco, the longest serving mayor during his time and has been credited for the progress the city has achieved over the years, should also be hailed for transforming the city, when he’s the local chief executive, into a more developed and competitive locality.

Rep. Tiangco says it’s been his vows to the city and its people the first time he assumed public post to give his best and dedicate his time and efforts to bring positive changes to Navotas which was converted into a city when he’s at the helm.

“And with my younger brother now running the affairs of the city government, we can expect the continuity of programs and projects aimed for the residents especially those at the poor sector,” the Navotas lawmaker, who’s also the secretary general and United Nationalist Alliance’s spokesman, says.

Takbo ni Juan for Iskolar ng Bayan

Navotas’ ‘Takbo ni Juan,’ which is now on its third year, is all set by December 1 which is expected to be participated in by bigger number of residents including lesbians and gays as the city observes HIV Awareness Month.

Urging them to register and get involved, Mayor Tiangco says the proceeds of the event will go to his administration’s ‘Iskolar ng Bayan’ as part of ‘Navotaas’ Scholarship Program.

Determined to help more deserving but poor students, the mayor has shelled out P.5-M for the educational program which continues to raise funds for them through the fun run.

2nd Youth Congress

Thousands of young people joined the 2nd Youth Congress initia-ted by the local government despite the recent decision to suspend the election for the Sangguniang Kabataan. Spearheaded by the Navotas City Council for Youth Development which Mayor Tiangco heads, the event turned to be a success mainly because of the attendance of several local youth groups from the city’s 14 barangays.

“Bagaman nasa ilalim pa ng pagdinig sa Kongreso ang rekomendasyong pagreporma sa SK, hindi nangangahulugan na titigil na ang mga programa para sa kabataan dito sa lungsod,” the mayor says.

During the event that took place recently at the City Hall, the mayor challenged the youth coming the schools, church and communities to bring out issues concerning them to serve as basis in formulating plans and programs for them.
