NAG-RESIGN na ang Customs district collector ng Port of Manila na si lawyer Rogel Gatchalian, at sinabi na nais niyang ipakita ang kanyang suporta sa Pangulong Benigno Aquino III para sa pagre-reporma ng ahensya.
Sinabi ni Gatchalian na ang kopya ng kanyang resignation letter ay ipinadala na niya sa Pangulo, kay Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, at kay Customs commissioner Ruffy Biazon.
“Actually, irrevocable resignation (yun). Una, to give the President a free hand to reorganize the bureau. Second, I just want to show na hindi ako kapit-tuko, and third, nakalagay din dun to show my sincerity in supporting the reform agenda of the President,” pahayag nito.
Si Gatchalian ay isa sa 27 Customs collectors na binalasa o inilipat ni Biazon sa Customs Policy Research Office (CPRO) sa ilalim ng Department of Finance.
Itinalaga itong POM district collector noong Oktubre 2009. Ayon dito, nakakolekta ang Port of Manila ng P53.7 bilyon noong 2010 at P38.9 bilyon noong 2009.
“I was then awarded the distinction of being the top district collector for 2010. For 2011 and 2012, the Port of Manila further registered increases in revenue collections compared to 2008, 2009, and 2010,” pagmamalaki pa nito.
Matatandaan na binira ni Pangulong Aquino ang BOC sa kanyang State of the Nation Address noong Hulyo dahil sa pagpalyang masawata ang smuggling.
