IT’S worth noting that the local officials of Malay town in Aklan where the famous Boracay island is located, are tirelessly working on how to further improve and make it a truly world class tourist destination.
And one of the big ticket projects that they are working on is the construction of Boracay Airport complex that spans the islands of Caticlan and Nabas.
One of my friends and local resident George Cawaling intimated to me that once fully operational over the next few years, some of the complex’s structures will set Philippine records for sheer size and for being environment-friendly.
George and his friend Kel Tolentino informed me that the US$300 million airport complex is through the initiative of Vice Mayor Wilbec Gelito and the municipal council and is fully supported by Mayor John Yap.
The most imposing structure in this $300 million airport complex will be its mammoth 5,000 room budget-hotel. When completed, this hotel will be the largest budget-hotel in the country and probably in all of Southeast Asia.
In comparison, the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, considered the largest Philippine hotel, has only 562 rooms.
Room rates at the budget-hotel are expected to range from P1,000 to P2,000 per night and is intended to help decongest Boracay, which will be flooded with up to three million tourists in the next few years.
The planned dome-shaped convention center will seat up to 25,000 persons, or 10,000 more than the Smart Araneta Coliseum, while the new terminal building itself will use the flow of fresh air that would surely make it one of the greenest terminal in the country.
It will derive part of its electricity from solar panels; will install a rainwater collection system; and will have its own waste water treatment plant.
And, of course, the new Boracay Airport will set records of its own since it can accommodate some three million tourists annually or 10 times the capacity of the old airport.
With these aggressive developments being spearheaded by Mayor Yap and Vice Mayor Gelito, I can see that Boracay Island will surely play a major role in economic growth and activities not only for Aklan but for the whole country as well.
Congrats, Mayor Yap and Vice Mayor Gelito!
By the way, happy birthday to my father Benjamin who celebrated his 73rd birthday yesterday!
