MANILA CITY TRAFFIC

FOR the first time last Wednesday, after months of not having taken a public ride that pass through the streets of Manila, I found out that traffic is now flowing smoothly in the area (although it is another story in Espana which turns into a sea of floodwaters during or after a short but heavy downpour).

Like many commuters who once patronized the MRT but opted to take other means of public transportation for fear of another MRT breakdown (indeed, I was told there was a train malfunction again that day), I took instead an airconditioned bus to Pasay and found myself enjoying the very cool and comfortable bus ride and appreciated the almost full view of Quiapo Church and the people hearing mass.

Except for one or two vendors, the vicinity has been cleared and people could start appreciating the church is a central landmark of the City. After Quiapo bridge, I started to wonder where the bus was taking us when it reached Lawton, as it turned to its right and took the street before reaching Plaza Lawton and entered a bus terminal.

It stopped only to unload people and went out again towards Taft Avenue. Again, I saw the splendor of the Post Office Building and realized that the area has ceased to be a loading and unloading area. Thanks to the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau led by its very energetic and hardworking Officer in Charge, Carter Don Logica.

I received a complaint, though, from PLM Professor Bella Robles about the horrendous traffic along Chinese General Hospital, made worse, she said, by “defective traffic lights, undisciplined drivers, and illegally parked vehicles.”

Annie Tubera, Media Affairs officer of the Office of Vice-Mayor Isko Moreno, attributed the traffic to the construction of the streets in the area. I am sure that the most visible person in the streets of Manila these days, OIC-Director Carter Don Logica, will immediately act on the matter as soon as it reaches him.
