Nadal wins 9th French Open title

RAFAEL NADAL defeated archrival Novak Djokovic to win his ninth French Open title and retain the number one ranking.

Doing what he does so well on the red clay of Roland Garros, a surface and site he dominates so completely, Nadal wore down No. 2 Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in the final on Sunday.

It was the fifth straight French Open title for Nadal and 14th Grand Slam title overall, tying him with Pete Sampras for the second most by a man, behind only Roger Federer’s 17.

Nadal has won 35 consecutive matches at Roland Garros since his only loss there opposite Robin Soderling in the fourth round five years ago.

The loss prevented six-time major champion Djokovic from completing a career Grand Slam and overtaking Nadal as the world’s top-ranked tennis player. Noli Cruz
