MAYOR OCA’S KINDNESS

arlie-calalo41 TO motivate primary public school students’ interest in learning, Caloocan Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan starts distributing free school bags and school supplies immediately following the opening of classes on Monday 2 to over 30,000 elementary students.

“This is a great opportunity for the city government to provide continuous support of bags and school supplies especially to Grade-1 students from 59 public elementary schools in the city,” Malapitan tells this writer. “By providing a backpack filled with school necessities, we are helping a child gain greater access to a world of learning that can only be attained in school.”

The school items that the mayor is distributing this year include notebooks, pencil case containing pencils and erasers and bags, according to Ms. Gigi David, the city’s public information officer, said.

Since assuming post last year, the former lawmaker-turned-local chief executive, has been distributing free school materials under his ‘Tao ang Una’ policy of governance to help financially troubled parents in partnership with the Department of Education-Caloocan.

DepEd-Caloocan has been assisting the city government by monitoring the distribution of the school materials in all public schools and ensuring the orderly and efficient implementation of the program.

POLICE-ON-WHEELS

MEANWHILE, the Valenzuela City police with the support of the administration of Mayor Rex Gatchalian have maximized its community relations after it launched a one-of-a-kind police truck that will not only stop crimes but conduct interfaith dialogs, among others.

Launched recently, the Valenzuela Police-On-Wheels is practically a moving police precinct, says police chief Senior Supt. Rhoderick Armamento who’s been hailed for such idea that other police stations outside the city want to follow suit.

Extra-gratified by the support the police get from the Gatchalian administration, Col. Armamento says the VPOW is an L-300 truck with a compact office inside and is also stocked with search and rescue equipment.

The police chief says the transformation van is equipped with police blotter, PA system, Wi-Fi for online vehicle verification, e-warrant and e-rogues.

“It can process police clearance in blotter excerpts thereby bringing the police and the city government much closer to the hearts and minds of the residents,” he says.

Mayor Gatchalian says there are already two VPOWs that have been roving around the city everyday, run by three three-person teams that are working in shifts.

We learn that city government plans to add 10 more VPOWs within the year.

As in any precinct, residents can file complaints at the VPOW, which they both described it as having strong potential as crime deterrents.

“With these trucks driving around the city, anyone would think twice before committing any crime. People would also feel more secure when they know a VPOW would pull over at their street anytime of the day,” according to the former lawmaker-turned-mayor.
