SPECTATORS during the Pagsanjan Bangkero Festival held on Saturday, March 22, in Laguna will never forget the amazing display of heroism and sportsmanship by the members of the five-month old Philippine Marines Dragon Boat Team that won also the hearts of many who have viewed the news reports on the dragon boat race competition.
During the elimination round at the 300-meter course, the boat of the Pyros team went out of its lane, bumping from behind the Philippine Marines boat which, in turn, bumped another boat that eventually capsized. True to their vocation to protect and ensure the safety of their fellowmen, the Marine paddlers jumped out of their boat to rescue the boatmen of the capsized boat, a rare feat that amazed and impressed everyone.
The act of heroism was caught on video by veteran cameraman Joel Mamaril of PTV 4. Everyone flocked around him to view from his camera what actually happened, the Marine team’s feat later immortalized in a report by Dina Paguibitan, a reporter of the same station who shares with me the same passion for the AFP.
The Philippine Navy bagged the P30,000 cash prize and a trophy for finishing first place in the mixed category and P20,000 and a trophy also for the first place in the women’s category. The Dragon Boat Team of the Philippine Marine Corps, a unit under the Philippine Navy, brought home P25,000 in the mixed category and P15,000 in the women’s category plus trophies for finishing second place in both events.
Half of the Marine dragon boat team’s take home prize will be donated to the Philippine Marine Corps Officers’ Spouses Association, Inc. for its projects for sick and fallen Marines and/or their families, while the other half will be used for the team’s expenses.
