J-Cube survives Juke, completes elims sweep

J-CUBE didn’t look the part of an undefeated team, but it did just enough to beat and eliminate Juke, 82-73, in the Knights Pre-Season at the Dumlao Gym.

The win gave J-Cube a clean sweep of the elimination and the twice-to-beat edge over semifinal opponent Asterisk Ballers.

But Johnny Gran and Juke made J-Cube work for it.

Gran scored a tournament-high 40 points for Juke, almost single-handedly keeping his team in the game.

“He (Gran) is a beast today. We have no answer for him defensively,” said J-Cube gunner Aaron James Lintag, a prolific scorer himself.

With Gran scoring at will, Juke battled J-Cube into a 34-all standoff in the first half. But Lintag and J-Cube’s depth proved too much in the last two periods.

Lintag scored 13 of his 23 points after the halftime break and Jaime Suarez, Jr. hit three triples in the third period to spark J-Cube’s breakaway.

“This game shows that there is no weak team in this tournament. That’s why the twice-to-beat incentive is important. It will give us a psychological advantage knowing that we have an extra life,” Lintag said.

Juke wrapped up its campaign with 1-4 record.

In other games, IJNIP beat the Makati Raketeers, 91-76, while the Waterbenders continued their improbable run with a 61-54 win over the Asterisk Ballers.
