Citibank clinches semifinal berth

TWO-TIME defending champion Citibank booked a seat in the semifinal following an 84-56 win over Macquarie in the Inter-Foreign Bank League (IFBL) at the Homecourt Gym in Mandaluyong City.

Sam Ace Gonzales and Cassey James Cordero combined for 18 points in the second quarter as Citibank began to pull away.

Two more wins would give Citibank a sweep of the elimination round and a twice-to-beat advantage in the next round.

“Our goal is to win every time we play so a sweep means that we are accomplishing our goal every game,” said Gonzales.

Macquarie was able to hang around in the first period behind 6-foot-3 Alvin Fernandez, but Citibank tightened its grip of the match in the second.

With Gonzales and Cordero anchoring its offense, Citibank led by as many as 16 points before settling for a 39-27 halftime lead.

Gonzales added nine more points in the third period and Citibank continued to pad the lead despite using only seven players in its rotation.

Macquarie fell to 2-2.

In other games, Standard Chartered Bank bucked a slow start to beat HSBC, 83-80, and stay in semifinal contention while Deutsche Knowledge Services used a big fourth quarter to rally past Capital One, 62-50. Noli Cruz
