Ballers draw first blood in Knights Pre-Season
Do-it-all forward Sandro Amper did just enough damage on both ends of the floor to lift the Asterisk Ballers past Juke, 66-58, in the opening day of Knights Pre-Season on Sunday (October 5) at the Dumlao Gym in Shaw Boulevard.
Amper scored 11 points to lead the Ballers, but more importantly his presence inside the paint made life miserable for Juke big men.
The Ballers quickly established their inside game to take a 15-9 lead after one quarter. Juke opened the second period with seven quick points to grab the advantage, but it was all Ballers the rest of the way.
Nikko Guansing kept Juke within jabbing distance, but the size advantage of the Ballers proved too much in the end. The 5-foot-3 Guansing led all scorers with 14 points.
J-Cube routs undermanned Makati
J-Cube toyed with the undermanned Makati Rocketeers, 81-64, to open its account in the Knights Pre-Season on Sunday (October 5) at the Dumlao Gym in Shaw Boulevard.
The Rocketeers missed a handful of players due to a variety of reasons and J-Cube pounced right away.
J-Cube raced to a 19-10 lead in the first quarter and padded it to 40-25 at halftime. Both teams just traded baskets from there as the Rocketeers failed to gain grounds in the second half.
Aaron James Lintag led J-Cube with 21 points while Jay-R Rivera tallied 28 points for the Rocketeers.
The win gave J-Cube a share of early lead with opening game winner Asterisk Ballers.
IJNIP extends Waterbenders misery
Patrick Asturiano waxed hot early as IJNIP kept the Waterbenders winless since joining the tournament following a 63-58 victory on Sunday (October 5) at the Dumlao Gym in Shaw Boulevard.
Asturiano, who led IJNIP with 17 points, hit three straight triples in the first period to ignite his team’s offense. Following his cue, IJNIP went on a series of runs to take a 53-38 cushion heading into the fourth period.
That was when the Waterbenders made their move to make the game interesting.
Grizzled veteran Dennis Barlam flexed his muscles inside as the Waterbenders trimmed the gap to single digit. The 35-year-old Barlam finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
It was 63-55 with still more than three minutes to play and IJNIP failed to score the rest of the way. But the Waterbenders ran out of gas themselves and left the building still searching for their first win in any tournament organized by Kings of the Court.
The win gave IJNIP a share of the lead in the standings with the Asterisk Ballers and J-Cube.
