J-CUBE gunner Aaron James Lintag continued to burn the hoops at the Dumlao Gym. IJNIP found itself collecting the ashes of defeat for the first time in the Knights Pre-Season.
Lintag poured in 16 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter to rally J-Cube past erstwhile co-leader IJNIP, 82-72, on Sunday (October 26).
“I had it going late and my teammates did a nice job of finding me on my spots,” said Lintag, who improved his tournament-best scoring average to 25.5 points.
J-Cube (4-0) moved within a win of sweeping the elimination and getting the twice-to-beat reward that goes with it in the next round.
Trailing by five after the third period, J-Cube dropped a 12-2 run to take a 68-63 lead early in the fourth. But IJNIP answered with nine straight points to regain the lead, 72-68, 5:30 to go.
IJNIP, however, failed to score from there as Lintag and J-Cube stepped on the gas on both ends of the floor.
“Basketball is a game of spurts. Fortunately, we had the last say in the match,” Lintag said.
Despite the loss, IJNIP (3-1) remains a favorite to go all the way to the finals and meet its elimination round conqueror.
In other games, Juke nearly blew a 17-point third quarter lead before holding off the Waterbenders, 71-68, while the Asterisk Ballers virtually clinched a semifinal berth following a 58-52 win over the Makati Raketeers. Noli Cruz
