VALENZUELA’S YOUNG ACHIEVERS

IT’S a great time that young residents in Valenzuela City who have reaped national and international recognitions in various fields that made them the city’s pride and models to emulate have been cited by no less than its partylist representative.

Rep. Wes Gatchalian, of the Alay-Buhay partylist and youngest brother of Mayor Rex Gatchalian and ex-congressman and now District 1 Rep. Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian, was particularly proud of the first batch of “WES Youth Achievers,” who, he said, shared at least two things: All are Valenzuelaños and are either 30-years old or below.

The ceremonies were held recently at the Valenzuela City Astrodome which was initiated by his district office and graced by city hall officials as well as representatives from the civic groups, academe and other non-government organizations.

Rep. Wes says at least 27 awardees were included in the inaugural year “who have reaped national and international recognition in the fields of education, entertainment, leadership, sports, visual arts, and volunteerism.”

The awardees were selected from more than 200 youth endorsed by individuals, public and private schools, and socio-civic organizations all around the city.

The lawmaker, a Valenzuela native and one of the youngest lawmakers in the 16thCongress, says he started the award to inspire the youth to put their talents in service of their communities.

“You have a lot of inspiration to glean from the awardees’ life stories,” he said as he addressed the Alay Buhay scholars and local government officials who attended the ceremony.

The recognition day was graced by 2011 Ms. Universe 3rd Runner-Up Ms. Shamcey Supsup-Lee, guest of honor; Gerald Santos, guest singer-performer; and Percival Denolo, mud artist.

In the same event, Alay-Buhay launched the WES Youth Movement, a socio-civic organization that advocates youth advancement.

The awardees were Viq Ashley Alentajan, 2013 Most Outstanding Boy Scout of Valenzuela; Anne Kryssel Alonzo, chief Girl Scout medalist in Central Luzon; Nathaniel Cano, Red Cross Youth-Chapter Council president; Robie Rocaberte, 2013 Most Outstanding Red Cross Youth; Ma. Christine Sosa, Red Cross Youth-Instructor in Leadership Development; Abigail Pati, Red Cross Youth-Chapter Council officer; John Daver Santos and Jade Kathleen Yu, bronze awardees (2013 International Mathematics Competition in Singapore); and Joshue Cedric Taguinod, Sharmaine Claire Galala, Jessica Pineda, Clarita Tan, who all joined the Search for Young Scientists, 9th Regional Congress in Penang, Malaysia.

Other top awardees were Maria Charo Pineda, first place winner (2013 National Poster Making Contest of the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc.); Carl Lacap, Juan Carlo Garcia, Rey Balundo, Vince Bustillo, John Cabigao, Neil Patrick Cruz, Jude dela Cruz, Matthew Gabriel, Jensis Nivero, Joennel Ramos and Daniel Velves, 2012 grand champion of the Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars, national capital region; Kenneth San Andres, the Wonder Boy of the Philippine Motocross (10-time national champion); and Glaiza de Castro, actress, singer and composer and contract artist of GMA Network, Inc.
