Murray, Djokovic advance in U.S. Open

ANDY MURRAY shrugged off cramps all over his body to beat Robin Haase in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday (Tuesday morning in Manila).

“When it starts to kind of go everywhere, you don’t know exactly where it’s going to creep up next,” Murray said. “When you stretch one muscle, something else then cramps, too.”

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic didn’t face such struggle as he breezed past U.S. Open novice Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Murray’s cramps started in the back of his left shoulder and quickly spread to his forearm. He couldn’t toss the ball high enough to get any pace on his serves.

Murray was twice down a break in the fourth set, but the 70th-ranked Haase couldn’t capitalize.

Serving for the fourth set at 5-3, Haase double-faulted on break point to let Murray get back on serve. After holding serve, Murray went up 6-5 with a forehand winner. Noli Cruz
