NOVAK DJOKOVIC extended his unbeaten run at the China Open to 21 straight matches, topping Canada’s Vasek Pospisil, 6-3, 7-5, on Wednesday.
The top-ranked Djokovic rallied from a break down in the second set and fought off a set point at 4-5 to close out the match in straight sets. He has only lost three sets on his way to four China Open titles in four years.
Djokovic faces a tough road to pick up a fifth straight title, with a potential quarterfinal against No. 5-seeded Grigor Dimitrov and possible semifinal against U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic or Andy Murray. He could then meet No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the final.
In the distaff side, Petra Kvitova defeated Peng Shuai of China, 6-4, 6-2, to set up a third-round match opposite Venus Williams in a repeat of their three-set encounter at Wimbledon. Noli Cruz
