COASTAL DIKE vs STORM SURGE

NAVOTAS City Mayor John Rey Tiangco is taking pride of the massive coastal dike that’s being constructed with the huge help the local government is getting from elder brother Rep. Toby Tiangco and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

This ambitious project is said to literally cover and thus completely protect the city from storm surges once it is completely finished.

In huddle with officers and members of the Camanava Press Corps, the doubly-delighted city chief executive has announced that the project, which stretches from C-3 Road to Brgy. Tangos, is expected to be done next year.

This is on top of the road dike that is also being constructed primarily designed to protect most housing sites from floodwater and even high tide, according the Navotas mayor.

With an original elevation of 12.5 meters, he says the coastal dike has been redesigned with additional one meter in height after city officials noticed the storm surge especially during the most recent typhoons that displaced hundreds of families living along the coastal area.

“The coastal dike has been redesigned and even if there was a little delay, it was nothing to compare if the original design was pushed through but would not be effective and just be a waste of taxpayers’ hard-earned money,” Mayor Tiangco explains.

Set to be finished next year, the coastal dike was made possible through DPWH and the Navotas lawmaker’s Priority Development Assistance Fund, this writer was told. “Kapag natapos na ito, t’yak tuluyan nang mapuprotektahan ang lungsod lalo na laban sa storm surge syempre maliban lang kapag sobrang malalakas na alon ang dumating,” the mayor says further.

Aside from the solution it will give, the coastal dike would have double purpose as this would be transformed into a vast ‘baywalk’ and jogging area for the city folk and even non-residents. GOOD RIDDANCE/ARLIE CALALO
