TR-CP hustled its way to the title in the inaugural McKinley Hill Invitational on Sunday (November 23) at the Asia Pacific College Gym.
Using its trademark suffocating defense, TRCP forced Factset into a spate of turnover in the payoff period to rally for a 76-71 victory.
Trailing, 59-66, midway in the fourth, TRCP scored 12 straight points to seize control and never looked back.
“We know coming in that it will be a tough match. That’s why we didn’t get too frustrated even when we were down by double figures,” said Ron Santos, whose free throws gave TRCP the lead for good, 67-66, a little over three minutes to go.
The gap swelled to 71-66 entering the final two minutes with all the momentum on TR-CP’s side.
Erlan Oliva stopped the bleeding for Factset with 1:11 left, pulling his team to within 68-71. But Ian Ples scored for TR-CP in the ensuing play to make it 73-68 and Factset failed to get any closer the rest of the way.
Factset appeared to be the more dominant team from the get-go. With Ivan Belsa anchoring its attack, Factset led, 19-16, after the first period.
Belsa tallied 11 of his 13 points in the first half as Factset took a 41-33 lead at intermission. Factset padded it to 60-50 after three quarters.
It could have been bigger if not for the hot hands of TR-CP’s Chao Menguito. The sweet-shooting big man drained five three-pointers in the first three periods to keep his team within range.
“I just want to make impact plays when Factset is having a run. They can easily break the game open if we will not counter their aggression,” said Menguito, who finished with a game-high 21 points. Noli Cruz
