SHAKE DOWN

arlie-calalo41 THE series of shakedown on night clubs over the past weeks in Quezon City that’s carried out by the office of Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte-Alimurung with the support of the Women’s Desk of the QC Police District was primarily at finding minors working as entertainers or guest relations officers.

On one hand, club owners have reportedly decried the manner how the vice mayor’s staff handled the operations which resulted in some of their workers ended up the whole day at Camp Karingal even if they already showed their working permits. They said some of the parents or relatives of the girls showed up and proved that they’re already at the right age but failed to convince the group including policewomen that accompanied Vice Mayor Belmonte-Alimurung’s action team.

Informed about their claims, she has promised to look into it even if she threw her full support to the team which carried out the operations on several night clubs.

She says: “Not true. Only those without working permits were taken to Camp Karingal. I should know because I was present. It was headed by an all-woman police team with new male officers as support precisely to prevent the abuse of our girls. The parents are making up stories and we have discovered a lot, I will disclose it when the full report has been submitted to me.”

While taking primarily the women’s concern as her advocacy, she also wanted to ensure that the club workers have updated yellow cards since HIV/STD (human immunodeficiency virus/sexually transmitted disease) cases are increasing in the city.

WOMEN ENTREPRENEUR SUMMIT

AFTER the successful entrepreneurship summit held last month for over 1,000 young residents, the Navotas City government now trains its sight to the Women Entrepreneur Summit II set come June 28 to give them free seminar and training workshops, among others.

About 600 local women are expected to participate in the event, according to Mayor John Rey Tiangco who initiates the annual programs designed to extend the much-needed assistance to the residents to get employed or start up a small business.

In 2011, the mayor led the very first summit which was attended mainly by the youth. It was followed by a similar event in 2012 that was made exclusive for young women and the 3rd summit held last year was for all regardless of age and gender.

The exclusive summit for women will provide, among others, free seminar and training workshops particularly on online business selling, proper grooming and fashion, direct selling, home care products and banana chips making.

The event was in line with the public service being offered by the Tiangco administration as it leads in the week-long celebration of Navotas’ 7th cityhood anniversary starting June 23.

City public information officer Jayne Banayad says the registration began as early as Monday at the Navotas Hanapbuhay Center at the City Hall Complex.
