RAFAEL NADAL guaranteed himself of the year-end top ranking for the third time in his career and a spot in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals.
The 27-year-old Spaniard gutted out a tough 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) victory against Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka on Wednesday at the O2 Arena in London, England.
His second victory in Group A of the season finale means he cannot be overtaken by chief rival Novak Djokovic even if the Serb retains his title.
Nadal broke drew first blood in both sets, breaking Wawrinka on the fifth game of the first set and the fourth game of the second set. But the Swiss gamely broke back each time and sent both sets into a tiebreak. Noli Cruz
