Filipino MMA fighters to display explosiveness in One FC

FILIPINO mixed martial arts (MMA) fans should expect more explosiveness and well-rounded fighters when five MMA warriors from Baguio City’s famed Team Lakay battle highly competitive opponents on Dec. 6 at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City.

“Dinagdagan namin ang training at conditioning ng mga fighters natin. Mas well rounded sila ngayon dahil may training sila sa wrestling at grappling. Expect more explosiveness from them,” Team Lakay coach and former MMA bantamweight champion Mark Sangiao said.

The thrilling card of One FC: Moment of Truth will pit Team Lakay fighters Honorio “The Rock” Banario, Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, Geje Eustaquio, and female boxer Jujeath Nagaowa against experienced strikers.

In the main event, Banario will fight veteran Japanese featherweight Koji Oishi in a grudge match as the former attempts to regain his belt from the man who dethroned him early this year. Belingon will face Spaniard David Aranda Santacana and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Folayang will show off his deadly form against seasoned Dutch-Indonesian striker incent Latoel.

Former Filipina WBC Asia atomweight champion Nagaowa, in her first MMA fight, clashes with Malaysian muay combatant Siti Syahida Binte Adek and Eustaquio battles hard hitting fellow Filipino Eugene Toquero.

“Akala namin nung huli ready na sila (pero natalo). So now we have to work harder and we added more to their training and conditioning regimen,” Sangiao, who used to be a member of the Philippine wushu team, said.

As part of the rigid training regimen, Team Lakay hired Iranian European wrestling champion Ali Heydarabadi to coach and give the Filipino combatants inputs on wrestling and grappling, a fight discipline that Sangiao admitted was their weakness the last time which resulted in the defeat of four of the Team Lakay fighters.

He said the Filipinos were made to undergo eight weeks of rigid training that included striking, cage defense, takedown and ground wrestling as well as high-altitude running and sprinting in La Trinidad, Benguet, where the Team Lakay gym, considered one of Asia’s best, is located.

Even the fighters’ food intake and vitamin and weight supplements are being supplied and monitored.

Folayang has blamed his defeat the last time to the lack of nutrition and vitamin supplement. “Mabilis yung utak ko noon dahil sa matinding training pero mabagal yung galaw ng katawan ko dahil sa kakulangan sa nutrition at mga supplements.”

Sangiao, who has been MMA coach for 10 years, said the fighters have not yet reached peak form and he expects them to achieve this as fight day nears.

He counts on the Filipino fighters to redeem the country’s honor in the MMA community come December 6.
