Matapos ang pakikipagbakbakan sa puwersa ng Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) sa Zamboanga City na tumagal ng halos tatlong linggo, pinarangalan ni Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino III ang 18 sundalo dahil sa kanilang ipinamalas na tapang at determinasyon.
Sa kanyang pagdalo sa flag-raising ceremony sa Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, pinapurihan din ng Pangulo ang 2,473 sundalo na nakasagupa ng mga rebelde na mga tagasuporta ni MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari.
Dalawa sa 18 pinarangalan – sina Army Lt. Francis Damian at Cpl. Eduardo Saquing – ay binigyan ng posthumous Gold Cross Medal na kabilang sa mga napatay sa karahasan.
“We wholeheartedly salute and thank all our soldiers and policemen who bravely fought for the safety of our boss. Your dedication and professionalism will be etched in history. You will serve models not only to the present generation but the next generation as well,” sinabi ni Aquino.
Aminado si PNoy na hindi mareresolba ang krisis sa Zamboanga City kung hindi nagpamalas ng katapangan ang mga sundalo ng pamahalaan.
“You were the ones who were in the battle zone, traded gunfire and used your bodies against the bullets just to recover the city of Zamboanga from the rebels,” aniya.
“Look at your stark difference from the rebels: In your ranks, the basic objective was to protect the people while the other side used hostages as human shields, shot at firemen and Red Cross members, and dragged innocent civilians,” dagdag niya.
Upang personal na pangasiwaan ang operasyon laban sa mga rebeldeng MNLF, namalagi si Aquino sa Zamboanga City ng ilang araw sa kainitan ng bakbakan.
Pinapurihan din ng Pangulo sina Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin at Armed Forces chief Gen. Emmanuel Bautista dahil sa kanilang epektibong pamumuno sa pagsugpo sa karahasan sa Zamboanga City kung saan libu-libong residente mula sa pitong barangay ang nagsilikas.
